I photographed this scene during the winter of 2021. In many ways, I didn’t think a trip to Death Valley was in the cards this year. When I visited Zion earlier in the year, the campgrounds in Death Valley were still closed due to pandemic restrictions. It was only near the end of my trip to Zion that the campgrounds in Death Valley reopened. After returning home and regrouping from my trip to Zion, I made a special return trip to Death Valley. The weather was very calm much of the week, which gave me an opportunity to do some much needed exploring. This was the final photograph I took on that trip. Wonderful high clouds filled the sky at midday, but I knew they would likely dissipate toward sunset. I went with a south facing composition with some wonderful pools of water in the foreground. The clouds lasted just long enough for the warm light before sunset.
This photo was taken on Fuji Provia 100F transparency film with a Fujinon C 450mm f/12.5 lens on an Arca-Swiss F-Metric 8x10 view camera.
