A Will to Survive
A Will to Survive
I photographed this scene on my Spring 2018 backpacking trip to Southern Utah. I just love the character of the trees that grow in these canyons. The conditions are at times so harsh, yet they thrive. This particular Cottonwood tree was growing at the edge of a wash that drains a very large area. During summer thunderstorms, its roots are exposed to violent flash floods, and during the winter, it must survive heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures. I loved how the color of the leaves contrasted so nicely against the sandstone canyon wall in the background.
