Before the Wind
Before the Wind
I photographed this scene during the winter of 2021. In many ways, I didn’t think a trip to Death Valley was in the cards this year. When I visited Zion earlier in the year, the campgrounds in Death Valley were still closed due to pandemic restrictions. It was only near the end of my trip to Zion that the campgrounds in Death Valley reopened. After returning home and regrouping from my trip to Zion, I made a special return trip to Death Valley. The weather was very calm much of the week, which gave me an opportunity to do some much needed exploring. When I arrived in Death Valley on my first day, the sky was filled with wonderful high clouds. As sunset drew closer, they grew even thicker. As is often the case, a north facing compositions in Death Valley is a safe bet on a cloudy evening, so I found this wonderful scene of volcanic rock. Moments after taking this photo, strong gusts of wind swept across the barren landscape.
This photo was taken on Fuji Provia 100F transparency film with a Fujinon A 240mm f/9 lens on an Arca-Swiss F-Metric 8x10 view camera.
