Flight of the Phoenix
Flight of the Phoenix
I took this photo on my Spring 2014 backpacking trip to the Colorado Plateau. This is a canyon that I've returned to 4 years in a row. At the end of the canyon is a large alcove with several large potholes that have eroded through, creating the two holes in the ceiling.
It is common to see canyoneers toss a rope out of the lower hole, then rappel into the pool of water below. I took this photo in the morning when the alcove is lit by strong reflected light. One of the advantages of backpacking in a location like this is that you have the place to yourself all through the morning.
